177 competitors from all across the country entered a record 264 events in this year's Truro Open tournament. Held from 7 through to 13 August at Truro Lawn Tennis Club, Newbridge, Truro. The standard of play was superb across the whole week and spectators were entertained with high level matches in all age groups.
It was yet another strong year for the Cornish youngsters who once again proved they are reaching the top of their game and are ones to watch for the future, with no less than 35 Cornish entriants reaching thefinals.
The tournament also boasted one of the largest mini events that has taken place in the county with a record number of entrants (18 U8’s, 20 U9’2 and 15 U10’s) in the Taylor Trophy sponsored by TLTC chairman Paul Taylor. The standard of play was exceptional for such young competitors, and we were all treated to some thrilling matches in all the age groups.
Final results were:
U8 winner Sammy Norton (Cornwall), runner up Will Becconsall (TLTC Cornwall) U9 winner Eric Bogden (Somerset)
U10 Boys winner Joel While, runner up Edward Shattock (Somerset)
Girls Winner Arielle Fitkin (Cornwall), runner up Anya Gough (TLTC Cornwall).
The senior events were won by Cornwall’s Charlotte Pinch, men’s Thomas Jones, and in the mixed event TLTC’s Dory Crellin and Rob Williams beat fellow club members Juliette Walters and Matt Roberts.
The club would like to extend huge thanks to all the supporters and sponsors of the event, Watson Marlow, Tony Pryce Sports, Lillicrap Chilcott, Jackson-Stops & Staff and Truro and Penwith College without whose support the event would not have been possible.
