This past weekend saw Devon and Cornwall’s most talented young mini tennis players come together at the South Devon Tennis Centre in Ivybridge to compete in the finals of the Flybe Mini Masters winter series. The top 16 players on the Flybe leaderboard of each County qualified for the finals.

The Mini Orange (9&U) provided huge success for Cornwall as both finalists came from Cornwall tennis clubs. The event was eventually won by Harry Melville (Truro Tennis Club and coached by Ryan Fern). In the final he beat Will Stirling (Penzance Tennis Club and coached by Martin Coates and Rob Hepworth). Both players won all their matches before playing in closely contested final.

News from Celia Hillman: "The Rose Bowl Tournament is in memory of Lynne Butter, who died last year after a short illness. This tournament is played in her memory as she was a stalwart of the Ladies Wednesday morning group.

There were 8 of us who competed for Lynn’s Rose Bowl on Wednesday. We started off in sun, had to stop because of heavy drizzle; started again in warm mist and finished off in glorious sunshine.

We played 4 or 5 sessions of approximately 15 to 20 minutes each. Some pairs raced through to play as many games as possible and we were all quite competitive. We had to concentrate when at deuce because of playing a sudden death point. On the whole it was a fun occasion and the winner by 1 game was Pat Perkins."

Truro Tennis Club player and Level 1 coach, Kieron Butter has returned to competition after a long period of injury and rehabilitation to win the Men's event at the Kerrier tournament and the Grade 3 Newquay Heron Open under 18's boys singles tournament.

Kieron has returned to competition after two difficult periods of injury from April 2012. Firstly an injury to his back and then later to his wrist which required a significant operation in July 2013.

Up to this point, he had become one of Cornwall's most successful junior players reaching Number 12 in the country. He was also the recipient of the highly acclaimed Matrix funding and Future Stars status from the LTA in 2013 as well as being ranked 122 internationally for the U14 age group.

Kieron hopes to return to full competition now that he is injury-free and in the meantime he is enjoying being part of Truro Tennis Club again and he feels very privileged to be able to work with some of the new talented players currently coming through the club.
